Long time no post - I've been working away on a new blog....and although it's not quite finished

Loss and Devastation

Even before I became a photographer my most adored personal possessions were my photographs. I can not begin to image what their loss would mean to me.

When I think of all the people in Victoria suffering from the heartbreaking loss of loved family and friends and the loss of their homes my mind always reels at the enormity of such loss. For many who lose everything they own it's their treasured photographs that often times leave the most gaping holes.

When such tragedies struck I am often left feeling unsure of a way to contribute effectively and thankfully a very generous photographer Kris Leigh came up with an idea of a way that we could offer our time and services whilst contributing to fund raising efforts. I'm grateful to Kris for sharing her idea - on her website you can see a list of photographers being complied from around the country who are offering various opportunities to raise funds and make a contribution.

During the months of February and March I am asking that my clients visit the Australian Red Cross and donate the Session Fee via a Secure Online Form, send me an electronic copy of the receipt, please arrange the date and time with me first via phone or email. I do have limited numbers of sessions but I hope to make as many donations as possible.

Lost Amidst The Christmas Rush

Okay

So I've been lost around here for some time.....Christmas is crazy!!
I haven't had much of a chance to share any images. So I wanted to stop by and share this gorgeous Mum-to-be. I wish I looked this fantastic when I was 8 months pregnant!

You may remember a very similar pic - this is Tracey's second bub and we wanted to replicate the photo we took first time round.

This little guy is hoping for a baby brother but we will just have to wait and see........

I had the pleasure of photographing this gorgeous little guy a few days back. He was not at all interested in sleeping blissfully in a little ball while I snap away. He wanted to be in on the action!

Look at how amazing his eyes are!

Okay - so this one he looks like he was sleeping - but he was just thinking about it for, oh, two seconds and then decided it was much more interesting to stay awake!

I wish it really were Provence - but hey I have to work with what I've got. I can dream can't I?
This is a little dirt road near to my place - I've taken so many photos at this spot it isn't funny - all my rainbow and pink balloon photos with the girls were taken here. It's literally a few minutes from my place so when I realise photos of my kiddos have been neglected I grab the gear and head off.

The Finish Line

I just wanted to send out a huge thank you to all those people who generously sponsored the Boonah Babes and I in our recent triathlon.

I would have posted earlier but I've been exhausted!!

As I mentioned in earlier posts - I'm really not sporty and completing this has been such a huge event in my life (once again big hugs to Liz for motivating me).

The event so far has raised over 90 000 - which is really really wonderful - I am so pleased to be a part of this event. We've all said we will do it again which is even better.

Luke was telling me the other day about a show he saw and how science has discovered that we are at our happiest when giving something to others and honestly by putting myself out there to do something for others I have gained so much in return. Good intentions to live a more healthy lifestyle have never come to fruition until now and participating in this event has given me an active lifestyle that I wouldn't even have dreamed of each year when I made my New Years Resolutions. So I think it's true - doing something for others brings much happiness and gifts that you never dreamed of!!

Okay and now I am sharing the photos - and for my part it's not pretty!!

This is us crossing the finish line - we did it in under an hour!!

And here we are with our medals - I have no idea why my face is looking like that but I thought Luke got another where I didn't look so hideous! Oh and I accidentally deleted the ones of us in our swimmers - seriously it was an accident!
Hopefully Boonah Babes with be bigger and better next year!!

Ami & Arif are getting married!

The countdown is on for Ami & Arif's wedding. A few weeks back we headed out to capture them as an engaged couple.
We had a lot fun and drew quite a few stares while hanging out on a little bridge in the little town where their wedding is going to take place. We also saw a Red Belly Black snake which wasn't so much fun - it made me a little nervous and I was lothe to ask them to sit down on the grass after that.
It was a gorgeous glowy sunset that afternoon and we got some gorgeous back lit images.

Sam's

These kiddos belong to Sam. Sam is a special person in my life so it was an honour to capture her kiddos. Sam is our daycare mamma - she looks after Ava for me a few days a week so that I can take photos for other people. This time it was Sam's turn.

Sam is the best daycare mamma - Ava loves her to bits and it makes all our lives that much happier when we know we can get on with stuff while Ava is having a blast with Sam.

Meet the newest addition of the Higgins family!!

All year we have been planning and scheming to get the girls a puppy for Christmas - we had it all worked out and then along came this little girl and we decided to leap in head first and take her home.

She is darling and the girls have played with her all afternoon. Okay - so we've not done the first night yet - but how sweet is she???? Mary-Ella has been wanting a dog for the longest longest time and she is over the moon.

Ava is pretty thrilled too - can you tell by that cheesy grubby grin???

Well there are bound to be many more photos of Tallulah - my work will be cut out for me as she moves so fast.....until next time....

Triathlon Pink

So a few months back I mentioned Triathlon Pink.

Some of you may have wondered if I managed to keep my commitment to participate in the charity event despite my history of being unsporty and well ....dare I say it ....lazy.

Well I am happy to let you know the event is only10 days away and yes I am participating.

For months we have been working on the cycle and run legs but we had no access to a swimming pool during the winter months as our small town does not have an indoor heated pool - well the pool reopened and for the first time we put the three legs together - 300m swim, 9km cycle and 3km run and yes I did manage to complete it.........I will admit to needing to walk part of the run - it was hot and I was tired.....but I now know that I can and will cross that finish line come Sunday the 12th.

I'm really excited about the event and I have to send a big shout out to Liz who convinced me that being in a triathlon was a suitable activity for a computer geek like me. I really feel that I have accomplished a major change in my life and fitness level and if Liz hadn't sold the idea to me I would never have even considered such a crazy idea - so thanks Liz - although you do need a smack for the pink tutus (don't ask!!!).

At any rate - wish us luck .......and it wouldn't be a post without a pic so here is my Kitty....

Baby Alfie

Meet gorgeous little Alfie!! He is the most darling baby boy. It was such a treat to photograph a baby boy - most of my newborns have been little girls - which of course is lovely but fun for me to have such a cute little guy.

Alfie's mumma is a pretty talented lady who makes gorgeous kids clothes with cool vintage and retro fabrics.....here is Alfie hanging out on this awesome retro print.

It looks like he did a lot of snoozing while these photos were being taken but in reality he was too keen on having a nice long sleep.

This little sweetheart is Tilly - isn't she darling? At first she didn't want to play the sleeping game but a little patience paid off.

She wasn't at all interested in being moved and trying lots of backgrounds or different props but we managed to get some sweet shots of her.

I Got Soul But I'm Not A Solider

Thanks to The Killers and their track "All These Things That I Have Done"
I have finally broken that 3 kilometer mark in my running. I got an ipod for my birthday and listening to The Killers in helping me get further and further. I can't believe that I ran 3kms - without stopping - without dying....and I enjoyed it.

A few weeks back I thought I had done the 3km thing but sadly my calculations were off - this time I got it right and it was sooooo good. This song actually helped me to run faster even though I'd just run up a rather large hill and I still had another to go before reaching that 3k mark.

The line "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier" just really does it for me and my legs seem to pick them selves up and go faster.

This one by The Cold War Kids also gets me moving.

If anyone has any Indie Rock or Pop tunes they recommend please let me know. Listening to tunes stops any negative self talk that tries to beat me into becoming stationary.

Such A Joy

It really is such a joy and a pleasure to photograph children and families. To be afforded a little glimpse into their lives. To see the love and joy parents have for their children. To capture that and allow them to relive these moments really is something special.

This is my sister - B - she's due to have baby number two in just a few weeks. From the title you might guess that it's a girl - it's go team girl in our family !!!

While this was a maternity shoot it also turned into a family shoot and perhaps even an Emma shoot - how classic are these next two?
She is doing a little dance for me here.......

She was definitely marching to the beat of her own drum on this afternoon....I like that though - just goes to show that you don't need everyone looking at the camera smiling to capture great family photos. We got lots of shot of them together but these with Emma just doing her own thing are my favs.....

This is Emma's teddy known as Bedted. She takes him everywhere. We have shots of Mary-Ella's Lamby and they are so precious so I couldn't miss the opportunity to catch a few shots of him too. Stay tuned for the Amelia Mae installment......

Pink

It's a colour often seen around my place! I've often joked that between myself and the girls our washing line looks like a fairy floss machine exploded!

But today that is not the pink I'm talking about.

For those who know me well - this might come as quite a shock but I am entering a mini-triathlon!
Yes. I did use the words triathlon in relation to myself.
I can just see you there looking bewildered and saying "Sheila? In a triathlon?"
A puzzled expression or perhaps a furrowed brow ....."Sheila? Really? In a triathlon?"

Introducing the Triathlon Pink.
Its a breast cancer fund raising event - so not only is it doing good for others but getting me motivated as well.

A few weeks back one of the Year 2 mums asked me if I would like to join in. My response was an emphatic NO! A few days on and one of the other Year 2 mums asked me - this time it was something in the way she pitched it and I thought Yeah! I can do that.
It's certainly a huge challenge but having the triathlon to train for makes me feel like I won't give up the way I usually do when it comes to exercise.

So thanks Liz for giving me some direction and a real challenge in my life.

We need to swim 300m, cycle 9kms and run 3kms.

I'm only two weeks into training and I'm still feeling inspired - that is good.
I've been running a few times a week and I can feel my fitness improving already. I've just started to cycle and it's a killer but I am loving the feeling I get after exercise.

So wish me luck.
I hope no one has fainted at this crazy news.
I will keep you posted and will have to get Luke to photograph me at the finish line!!!

ps - Liz is now talking a horse riding endurance trail for next year - believe or not I might even be up for that! Now I need a bike and a horse.

I mentioned a little while back that a few other photographers and I were looking at getting the ball rolling with senior photos here in Australia - and by seniors we don't mean your granny - these seniors are the kind who are just finishing high school!

As parents we take millions of photos of our kids while they are little and as they grow we take less and less photos. For the past 18 years or so the main thing driving you as a parent is the goal of seeing your baby become a independent being with their own special skills and talents, ready to take on the world. That is what we want to capture - the neglected images of your parental goals coming to fruition..........

Getting Personal

For some time now I've been struggling to upkeep my personal blog as well as my photography blog. When I first started blogging some time back I used to blog family along with clients but then I thought it would be far more professional to keep them separate. So that is what I did. What happened though was that one or the other would become neglected.

In photography circles there is much debate about using your own children's photos in your marketing materials or on your website. Some feel it's not professional, so I've been moving away from my girls featuring on my website and it was easy to keep things separate with the two blogs.
What I've found though, is that it's just not me. My family and my photography are both central to my life and to keep treat them as two separate and distinct entities just doesn't seem to be working for me. I've been lucky and blessed enough to have a job that I absolutely love - it's part of the ebb and flow of our daily lives - so I've decided that from now on I will have the one blog - my children and my life will feature there along side all the great people I get to meet and photograph.
It feels better to me this way. It just fits right.

Fur Babies

When I was told I was photographing two Rottie's I wasn't quite sure what to expect and I have to admit being a little nervous and was hoping I wouldn't get my head or leg bitten off. These guys can certainly bark quite loud but they were friendly to me.....can't say the same for the fluffy poodles at the park - I think these guys would have had them in one gobble......

Mothers Day!

Mothers Day isn't too far off.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about what it means to be a mother. Its such a roller coaster ride of high emotions. Some days are crazy busy with packing lunches and plaiting hair and clicking seat belts and all the other one million little jobs that fill the day of the average mother. Then in amongst all the crazy, there are these moments of quiet wonder and awe at these little people in your life. Then someone needs a drink or can't a toy and time keeps ticking.

Thinking about what it means to be a mother in this day and age makes me wonder what it would have been like to be a mother in another time and place. Mothering probably hasn't changed all that much in the history of human kind.

It amazes me that we have a common bond with women all over the world - no matter what culture, religion, language or race. Motherhood is a ties that binds us - we are all in it together!

To celebrate all that it means to be a mother I am giving away complimentary sessions to any mother who wants one. You can give it as a gift to yourself of to another mother you know or you may like a session with your own mother!
The only thing is you need to book before 15th of May and your session needs to take place before June 30th.

I am working on a little side project that is in it's infancy but if any mothers would agree to be interviewed as well as have their session that would be fantastic. I would especially love some mother/daughter photos - the more generations of woman from one family the better.

PS - not all mothers are related by blood - so any woman who understands the bittersweet life of a mother is too be celebrated!!

When our kiddos are babies we get photo after photo of them - not wanting to miss anything, the way they get that cheeky grin, those chubby arms and legs. We photograph them eating, sleeping, we photograph them in bath and in the pool, playing with their toys and the list goes on.... your kiddos grow up and suddenly they aren't little kiddos anymore.

Before you know it you have someone on the verge of adulthood - you might get a snap of them on the graduation day or a few photos of them with their friends but the photos that document them and their personality are rarely taken. You've almost reached you parenting goals and you have no photos to mark this special stage.

A few other photographers and I have been mulling over this and we've begun working on a little project to help parents celebrate their almost grown children. Hopefully in the not too distant future I can link a website with more info and photos but for now I will share some photos of a gorgeous girl I got to spend a few hours with.

Big Brother

So here is the big brother and family as promised when I posted the adorable little newborn a few days back. This is her big brother who is full of beans!!! He was such a delight - he even asked me to out to dinner with the family when we were done!! What a sweetheart.

I consider myself to be so fortunate to meet people at some of the most special time in their lives. There is nothing quite like having a new little life to celebrate.

This little sweetheart was almost three weeks old and she slept like a dream.

Wow. I've never had to move so fast to keep up before!
This little cutie has only been walking for a few weeks but she wanted to run and I was darting all over the place to catch a shot.

This shot just makes me laugh! It's so typical of how the shoot went- but I wouldn't have it any other way. It makes it so much more meaningful when you get to capture the personalities of gorgeous little kiddos.

But it wasn't all catch up - I managed to get a few smiling shots which I know mums and dads just love. I do think this was the only time she took five.

Originally we were going to go to Roma Street Parklands but it was looking rainy so we opted for the Art Gallery at South Bank and it was a great place to play.

Shooting with Rob

A few days back I got the awesome experience to go out and shoot with Rob Heyman. It was such a great experience and I learnt a lot.

It was quite an adventure and I'm sure Rob and Shirl will never forget the winery. Wink Wink.

This little Kitty was not in mood for having her picture taken and was very uncooperative - except when the camera was pointed at her sister - then she decided to work it.

Henna Belly by Henna Oasis

A few days back I got to meet the lovely Kate who is expecting her first baby. Just a few days before we got together Kate had henna applied to her belly by the very talented Elizabeth from Henna Oasis. Henna takes a few days to develop to it's darkest shade so that's when I arrived - in time to shoot when the henna was looking it's best.

I love the green of the sari with the warm tones of the henna.

As you can see the designs are very delicate and decorative - it just amazes me that Elizabeth does this freehand and comes up with the designs as she works.

Kate and father-to-be Jason have a number of pet snakes - we thought it might add an interesting mix to the photo shoot to use one as a prop. It was slithering around a lot and I found it difficult to get a really good shot. Nothing like doing something a little different to spice things up!

I love how the black and white photos show up the intricate designs.

Sorry it's been so long since posting! Holidays will do that..........
It's not often that I get to photograph teens - my clients tend to have younger children .....but on our way home we stopped in to visit the talented Kelly Munce and we exchanged children to photograph - you can see Kell's blog Here and take note that she has been much better at editing and uploading her pics............. her work is out of this world ........

I'm afraid I have a backlog of editing to - once again I will blame the holidays.

This gorgeous girl is Kell's eldest and she is just awesome behind the lens.
Hopefully things will be back in full swing in no time.......

I was prewarned - but I had to move like lighting to keep up.........

I also got to meet their gorgeous fur babies - Gonzo and Wilson. I was really taken with 'the boys' and am now fighting the urge to get a furry friend of our own!

Through our photographer network, we are helping breast cancer survivors and their supporters to celebrate life with charitable photography sessions.

Any individual that has been diagnosed with breast cancer or completed treatment within the past 12 months qualifies for a Think Pink Session. Sessions are available to document the fight before or during treatment or to celebrate the victory when treatment is completed.

Clients will receive a complimentary session, (20) small prints, and a discount off additional print orders.

All profits from Think Pink Photography will be donated to The Beverly Family Foundation. As a 3-time breast cancer survivor, Danielle Beverly and her husband Eric joined together to form a foundation dedicated to promoting education, increasing awareness, and providing support and resources for families who have been touched by breast cancer.

Check out this little guys gorgeous blue eyes!! His parents and I were worried we wouldn't get a shot of them - he was so intrigued by everything around him - especially the grass and leaves !! This was captured with a some help from mum - lots of banging and shaking of marakka's!!

Here is one of the whole family. These were taken at the beautiful Japanese Gardens at Mt Cootha - such a lovely spot!! Hope you like them !

Welcome Bianca!

Last week I got the pleasure of taking photos of this little gorgeous newborn - Bianca. I just love newborns - they are one of my favorite subjects and Bianca was a doll.

On a side note - I'm hoping to introduce birth announcements to my range of products in the near future - I'm currently sourcing printing options - so mums and dads - stay tuned.....
Personalised cards/postcards are also being considered.

Passport to Brazil

A few days back I got to take some photos for a really exciting project that Tara Castle has been working on.

Tara has collected around 600 Teddies all destined for Brazilian orphanages. The teddies, old and new, have been donated by friends and family and more are welcome. Four shipments have already made their way to Brazil and Tara is working hard to find sponsors to cover the shipping fees - if you know anyone or have any ideas about how to get these bears on their way PLEASE let me know.
Currently the bears are hanging out at Pandemonium They began to get a little crowded at Tara's house so Leisa has given then shelter at the coolest cafe in Paddington until their departure dates are finalised.

This is Tara's second huge charity project - earlier in the year Tara along with two friends brought about the "The One-Armed Cookbook" - a collection of easy recipes from mums, dads, friends, family, chefs and even a few celebrities ....100% of the profits go to the Perinatal Research Centre at the Royal Brisbane and Woman's Hospital. Stop by and check it out.

Here are just a few of the little guys that are awaiting a ticket to Brazil.

This little guy really tugged at our heartstrings!! He needs a name.....

I hadn't been to Kholo Gardens before and went along with some other photographers to discover lots of great photo taking locations. I got lost on my way there - but I will certainly keep this spot in mind for upcoming sessions.

This gorgeous little bub doesn't like to smile for the camera and his mum and dad thought we wouldn't get one ...but we did...I haven't resorted to singing in order to get the smile - but it's really a last resort - lucky I didn't have to torture this family.
